Adventure space opera · The Breakers' War

They spent their lives cutting warships apart. Now they have to make one fly.

The Navy abandoned the frontier without a word. Three weeks later, something else arrived. The only warships within twenty light-years are the mothballed hulls nobody wanted — and the only people who can wake them are the breakers who were paid to scrap them. The Breakers' War begins with Book 1, Salvage Rights — in production now.

Entry 01 — The series

A junkyard world. A fleet of dead ships. A war nobody is coming to fight.

Callan's Yard is where the Colonial Navy sends its warships to die. Four generations of breakers have cut them apart — every weld, hatch, and magazine of four centuries of shipbuilding, held in living memory by the people paid to open them.

Then the Navy withdraws from the frontier without explanation. Three weeks later an alien force kills the relay, takes the orbitals, and begins methodically stripping the planet. Help is twenty light-years away and not coming.

Dex Mulvaney, salvage foreman and ex-Navy drive chief, knows the mothballed hulls in orbit better than the people who commissioned them. He was thrown out of the service for refusing to certify a ship that wasn't ready. Now he has to certify a four-hundred-year-old destroyer on a schedule that makes it a lie — and send people he's known his whole life aboard her.

Each book wakes a bigger, older, stranger hull. Underdog crews, found family, dry humor, and engineering competence as the sharpest weapon on the field.

Entry 02 — From the Yard's ledger

Four entries from the world.

Four hundred years of taking warships apart built a trade, a law, and a set of superstitions. Book 1 turns on all four of these.

Law / Right of Wreck

The oldest law humans carried into space.

Title in an abandoned hull passes to whoever recovers her. The Navy withdrew without asserting title over a single mothballed ship. Under the statute as written, the Yard's people aren't stealing the warships they restore. They own them.

Enemy / The Chandlers

They have never signalled, demanded, or answered.

They killed the relay, took the orbitals inside a day, and began working the surface with the unhurried competence of a crew on a scheduled job. The Yard's working theory: they aren't conquering the world. They're excavating it.

Region / Deadwater

The largest fleet within twenty light-years. None of it can fly.

Four centuries of mothballed hulls in decaying parking orbits, named for the wet-water term — the dead layer where a ship loses way and answers nothing. The debris moves, no chart survives it, and only the tug crews know the way through.

Creed / The Last Manifest

A ship is owed an accounting before she is opened.

Before the first cut, the oldest breaker on shift reads the ship's name, class, and final posting aloud, and the crew answers heard. It is not a religion. But a breaker who has read a last manifest will tell you the ship was listening.

Entry 03 — The author

Stories about people who fix things under fire.

I write about crews, not chosen ones — people who hold the line because they know how the machine works and nobody else is coming. If you like your space opera with grease under its fingernails, a dry sense of humor, and wars won by competence instead of destiny, you're in the right yard.
